I Survived Another Semester As A Conservative

I did it. I survived another semester of college as a young conservative, an outspoken young conservative at that. College is a hostile environment for people who don’t think the same way as their liberal professors. Universities are nothing more than mere indoctrination factories that want to churn out as many “educated liberals” as they possible can. As a political science minor, this is evident in nearly every class I take. With the exception of two professors, the rest of the professors in the department were obviously liberal. So its not easy for a girl like me.

I was taught to sit quietly and ignore the harsh comments made by professors. My parents raised me to respect my elders and not talk back…but they never said anything about talking back to my peers. I wouldn’t even necessarily call it talking back as much as it is me standing up for my beliefs. It is not uncommon to hear professors bad mouth Republicans or any conservative ideal ever. But sometimes enough is enough.

When I entered college, my English professor was a raging liberal and he didn’t hide the fact that he hated Mitt Romney. What my professor didn’t know was that I had been spending my weekends door knocking and phone banking for Mitt. I kept my mouth shut and let him go on rants about how awful Republicans were. I even wrote to his leanings because I cared more about the grades. But upon coming to ECU, I noticed that liberalism was hiked up a notch. I watched as many professors ranted for half the class about Republicans ruining the country and that it’s because of the Republicans that this and that have happened, while they completely disregarded that it was their darling Barack Obama who promised to change everything.

I found my voice during my freshmen year but didn’t become extremely vocal until my junior year. It was intimidating talking to professors about politics when I knew that they would whole-heartedly hated the fact that I thought differently and saw me as “uneducated.”

I am a criminal justice major and the liberal bias is even obvious in there. We are required to take a class called “Race, Gender, and Special Populations.” This class is supposed to teach us about the different ways in which minority populations are treated by the system. It’s a wonderful class that is definitely necessary. However, my professor did not hide that she hated white men, even though she was a white woman. She also made sure we knew that she was Marxist feminist. I don’t care what you are, I want you to teach me what I need to know without putting spin on it. She spent an entire class period making sure that we knew that the United States and Israel were both terrorist countries who we should hate.

I kept my mouth shut for the most part but had no problem talking to other people about it. I warned people before they took her class that she wasn’t the most fair professor on the planet. You know it’s bad when the academic advisor for criminal justice majors warns you that white men aren’t given a fair chance and that she was the total opposite for me politically.

Colleges are supposed to help students learn and thrive in their own opinions. Not force feed them liberal jargon in the hopes that they don’t actually fact check what the professor said. Its sad how different the world is now. Universities are more liberal than they used to be and more divided than ever. My parents don’t pay for me to be told what to think, they pay for me to learn.

So if you’re a young conservative like me and you’ve made it through another semester, raise your glass to not drinking the kool-aid but rather sipping on the wine.

Love your comment about universities teaching you what to think and not how to think. My school understands the importance of a liberal arts education, and I’m so thankful I don’t have to experience this nonsense!
